A couple from Somerset, Derek and Brenda Dodge, are joyously celebrating their 70th wedding anniversary, a remarkable milestone known as the platinum anniversary. Their enduring love story began in the village of Baltonsborough near Glastonbury, where they first crossed paths at a local youth club. The serendipitous meeting occurred when Brenda, moved by compassion, offered to accompany Derek home after he was asked to leave the club for losing his temper.

Their journey together officially commenced on March 12, 1955, when they exchanged vows at St Dunstan’s Church in Baltonsborough. Derek had initially proposed to Brenda at a tender age of 19, but her parents, deeming them too young, advised them to wait. This period of anticipation only strengthened their bond, leading to a union on Derek’s 21st birthday.

Throughout their seven decades of marriage, the Dodges have encountered both joys and sorrows. They welcomed two children into their family, a son, and a daughter who tragically passed away from cancer in her 40s. Despite the hardships, their love has persevered, resulting in the addition of seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren to their loving family.
