Perth Mint in Australia has recently introduced the latest addition to its Next Generation series of silver bullion coins, showcasing the flightless Emu. This series, initiated in 2018, focuses on emblematic Australian wildlife, emphasizing parent-offspring relationships. The 2024 release highlights the Emu, a significant bird indigenous to Australia, recognized for its soft brown feathers, long neck, and legs. Standing as tall as 6.2 feet and weighing around 120 pounds, Emus are known for their remarkable speed, capable of sprinting at 31 mph. These birds are highly adaptable, inhabiting various terrains from open plains to snowfields.
Female Emus lay up to 15 eggs, leaving the male to nurture and protect the chicks once hatched. The chicks mature swiftly, achieving full adulthood within a year. The coin’s reverse side, designed by Natasha Muhl, features an adult Emu with three chicks in a landscape adorned with native flora. Radial lines symbolizing sunlight complement the design, with a P125 mintmark denoting the Perth Mint’s 125th anniversary. An authentication feature, a micro-laser engraved letter, adds security against counterfeiting. The obverse side showcases HM King Charles III’s effigy, with detailed specifications inscribed below.
The Emu coin comes in two variants: a 2 oz coin and a 10 oz coin, minted to a piedfort specification. The coins are dispatched from July 26th, presented in protective holders or capsules. The series also includes coins featuring the Koala (2018), Australian crocodile (2019), Kookaburra (2020), Platypus (2021), Dingo (2022), and Kangaroo (2023).
The Perth Mint’s initiative to feature iconic Australian fauna on its silver bullion coins not only celebrates the country’s rich biodiversity but also offers collectors unique and aesthetically appealing investment opportunities. The intricate designs and security features incorporated into these coins enhance their value and appeal to numismatists worldwide. Additionally, the limited mintage of these coins adds to their exclusivity and desirability among collectors and investors alike.
